The essence of the Mediterranean since 1986

A family home in L'Hospitalet turned into a temple of fine gastronomy

Casa Varela 1986

Our story

A story written with patience, family and heart in L'Hospitalet

In the Santa Eulàlia neighbourhood, where it all began in 1986, Antonio Varela and Matilde opened a small bar serving breakfasts and lunches. She cooked like an angel and, in a room seating just 40, they served more than a hundred people a day. Dish by dish, with hard work and humility, they built something far greater than a restaurant: a home.

From that seed grew the dream of their son Toni. At only 14 he was already imagining what Casa Varela is today. Hard years followed economic crisis, family troubles, Matilde's illness but life brought light with the birth of his daughter Abril. That moment changed everything. Toni took the reins and, even though COVID put everything at risk and took good friends with it, he looked at his daughter and decided: “I'm going all in. And I'm going for it all.”

Today, forty years on, we celebrate what we have built together: a house with memory, where the ever-simmering pots of old are still tended with the same love as in 1986, but with our eyes set firmly on the future.

Thank you for being part of this story. Here in L'Hospitalet, you will always have a table and a warm embrace.

L'Hospitalet de Llobregat · Santa Eulàlia district

A restaurant in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, on the doorstep of Barcelona

Casa Varela 1986 is a contemporary Mediterranean restaurant at Carrer de Blas Fernández Lirola 82, in the Santa Eulàlia district of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona). We serve lunch every day from 1 pm to 4 pm and dinner every evening, and we have been here since 1986.

We are in the heart of Santa Eulàlia, the neighbourhood where the Varela family opened their first bar in 1986. It is a well-connected part of L'Hospitalet, next to the Gran Via 2 shopping centre and a short hop from the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via venue — easy to reach whether you live around the corner or have just landed for a congress.

On the table you will find market-fresh rice dishes, seasonal produce and house classics such as the slow-cooked pork knuckle tacos or the beef cheek cannelloni. For company lunches and celebrations we prepare set menus from 8 guests, and we have private areas available.

We open every day: Monday to Wednesday from 1 to 4 pm and 8 to 10.30 pm, Thursday to Saturday until 11 pm, and Sundays from 1 to 4 pm and 7.30 to 10.30 pm. You can book online or call us on +34 934 31 92 05. The menu has vegetarian dishes, and we adapt what we serve if you tell us about an allergy or intolerance.
